Now, I know that Spyro fans hate Skylanders because of the fact that Spyro has changed... Not only his design, but I guess his personality too?
I don't know...
Well, nostalgic Spyro fans of the original series wanted a feeling much like the original Spyro games. And TLoS fans wanted... well... more TLoS, I guess? I myself didn't pay attention much to the Spyro series during this age because I was still a small 8-year-old at the time, but it was mainly because I never was able to find the games. Now, if I DID find the TLoS games, I still wouldn't change.
It's part of my personality not to judge a game before I played it. I gave Skylanders a try, and guess what? I loved it!
It has a more adventure-y lego game feel to it due to its easy difficulty, but nonetheless, the game was great. The puzzles were fun, leveling up the Skylanders was fun, and the levels and bosses were unique. The Skylanders theirselves were the main attraction to the game, alongside with the significant Portal of Power, of course. I have collected 8 skylanders, 2 of them belonging to my younger brother. I have the starter pack characters,(Trigger Happy, Spyro, Gill Grunt) and I have picked up Bash, Stealth Elf, and Drobot.
They are very fun to play, especially Stealth Elf. I like to use Stealth Elf because of the fact she just disappears and deals heavy damage close range with the Pook Blade Saint path. Now I would know because I have an almost-fully-upgraded Stealth Elf at lvl. 10 (Not bragging, because I know others out there have already fully upgraded her).
I explained the game, now will you Skylanders haters just give the game a chance before you hate it?
The same thing happened with Halo fans and Halo Wars. They said Halo Wars was gonna be a terrible game, I gave it a try... well, I loved it! It's given a bad name because it's not a sequel, and I guess that's a similar case for Skylanders, though I may not know what I'm talking about. But hey, I'm not a hater of Skylanders or Spyro, am I?

Also, another opinion of mine...
I know that Skylanders was supposed to be a Spyro game... but... did Activision know this was going to happen?
They changed Spyro and fans hated the fact that they did, and so they gave the game a bad reputation. It gave me a hard time to decide whether to buy it or not due to the Spyro fans almost convincing me to not buy it. But I did anyways.
Okay, back on topic.
What if they didn't have Spyro and instead was its own independent series? Now, I personally think that would affect both Skylanders fans and Spyro fans mutually in a good way.
Spyro fans wouldn't complain about Spyro changing, so at least the game would have a better reputation. The Skylanders fans will also have a nice, relaxing time with the game and not have the game have such a bad reputation. I know that the game wouldn't have been as popular due to Spyro's recognizability, but hey, that's just what I think.
